Affordable. Functional. One-of-a-kind. DIY shelving with materials from Home Reno Heaven.
Shelves do more than store—they display, organize, and add personality to your home. But custom shelving can be costly if you’re buying new. That’s where reclaimed materials shine.
At Home Reno Heaven, we see a wide range of salvaged wood, brackets, and trim donated by local contractors, residents, and builders. These materials often have plenty of life left—and with a little creativity, they can become the foundation of your next project.
Here’s how to create custom shelves that are sustainable, affordable, and full of character.
Step 1: Find Your Materials
Start by visiting HRH to check our current stock. Look for:
- Reclaimed wood: Offcuts, old flooring, trim, or solid panels.
- Brackets: Metal, wood, or even repurposed hardware.
- Screws & fasteners: Save time and money by picking up gently used extras.
Tip: Don’t worry if boards are different sizes or finishes. Mismatched can mean more charm.
Step 2: Measure and Cut
Decide where your shelf will go—kitchen, hallway, garage? Measure the space and cut your reclaimed boards to length. Many pieces will already be close to standard sizes.
Bring the boards to HRH before purchasing if you’re unsure—we’ve got volunteers who can help you figure out what will work.
Step 3: Sand and Prep
Most reclaimed wood will need a quick sanding. This removes old finishes and smooths edges. Keep some of the “imperfections”—they add character!
You can stain, paint, or leave the wood natural depending on the look you’re going for.
Step 4: Install Your Brackets
Mount your brackets securely into wall studs using screws or anchors. Then place the shelf on top and secure with small screws underneath if needed.
Mix up your look with metal brackets for an industrial feel or decorative scroll brackets for a vintage touch.
Step 5: Style It Your Way
Now the fun part—decorate your shelves. Books, plants, tools, or treasures—whatever fits your space and personality.
Why This Project Matters
Reclaimed shelving is more than a weekend DIY. It’s:
- Affordable: Materials cost a fraction of retail.
- Sustainable: Keeps usable wood out of the landfill.
- Impactful: All proceeds from your HRH purchases help fund local housing initiatives.
